Veliye Ay earned a BA in Turkish Language and Literature from Mimar Sinan University and an MA in Classical Turkish Literature from Marmara University in Istanbul, Turkey. Currently she teaches Elementary and Intermediate level Turkish classes at George Mason University. She has also taught Virginia Tech students through the 4-VA initiative. She is a PhD student in the Middle Eastern History program at the University of Maryland and focuses on Ottoman intellectual and literary history. Her research interests include teaching Turkish as a second language, online and hybrid teaching, the Turkish novel, early modern Ottoman poetry, and Ottoman intellectual, cultural, and literary history.
