About the Center

The mission of the AbuSulayman Center for Global Islamic Studies is to advance an accurate and nuanced understanding of Islam and Muslim societies, including their role in world history as well as their engagement with the contemporary world. The Center views Islam as both a global faith tradition and a world civilization; thus, the Center emphasizes a transnational and cross-regional framework for exploring Islam.

The AbuSulayman Center accomplishes its mission by supporting multidisciplinary research, academic programs, public scholarship, and community outreach—with firm roots in the modern humanities and social sciences. By providing research and educational opportunities for students, faculty, and visiting scholars—as well as the general public—the Center is developing 21st century leaders with a sophisticated understanding of the complex dynamics and contexts that shape Muslim communities worldwide.

The Center’s strategic location in the Washington DC/DMV/National Capital area allows it to draw on unparalleled resources and expertise to advance its scholarly mission, as well as on extensive professional opportunities for current and future scholars of Islamic Studies. Through conferences, workshops, publications, and other events it reaches diverse stakeholder communities in its immediate vicinity, across the country, and around the world.
