The history of Islamist movements in Turkey is regarded overwhelmingly as the history of political parties coming successively from the National Order Party to the recent Justice and Development Party. However, Islamism as a youth movement had a distinctive agency and effect which can be distinguished from the Islamist political parties of the 1970s. Especially after the triumph of the Iranian Revolution of 1979, Islamist youth became ideologically radicalized and assumed the revolutionary force that would outgrow party politics.
Ertugrul Zengin is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Pollitical Science Department at Galatasaray University in Turkey, and is a Doctoral Fellow at the Ali Vural Ak Center for Global Islamic Studies.
