On May 21-23, 2010, the Ali Vural Ak Center for Global Islamic Studies hosted a group of Islamic Studies scholars from George Mason University and other American academic institutions for a workshop on “Qur'anic Reading and Reasoning: Rethinking Approaches to the Sacred Text.” This exploratory workshop aimed to be a critical first step in a larger project identifying methodologies that might explicate a self-conscious and academically rigorous relationship between the academic study of the Qur’an and modern Qur’anic interpretation.  Articulating such a relationship will itself confront inherited conceptions of secular religious studies as well as ‘modern Western academic’ and ‘traditional’ modes of inquiry.

Sponsored by the Ali Vural Ak Center for Global Islamic Studies.
