The AbuSulayman Center for Global Islamic Studies (ACGIS) at George Mason University is pleased to partner with Sapelo Square to preserve and amplify Black Muslim histories and voices. The partnership supports Sapelo’s work documenting Black Muslim life in the United States, including the Fighters’ Heaven Oral History Project, which will record the experiences of Black Muslim men and women connected to Muhammad Ali’s training years in Deer Lake, Pennsylvania.
The project will preserve oral histories through recorded interviews, transcription, photography, and a publicly accessible digital archive. The partnership also supports Sapelo Square’s publications and creative writing initiatives, creating opportunities for new scholarship and emerging voices. Together, ACGIS and Sapelo Square seek to strengthen the historical record and make Black Muslim experiences more visible and accessible to scholars, students, and the wider public.
