WMST 300 - 001: Muslim Women Wrtrs & Thinkers

Countless books have been written about women in Islam. Muslim women’s social and religious status, their rights or limitations in marriage, their lifestyle and clothing choices are topics of seemingly endless debate—often by those who are neither Muslim nor women.

But what do Muslim women have to say?

In the last few decades there has been an explosion of Muslim women authors—scholars, activists, novelists, poets, and memoirists—who have decided that Muslim women should speak for themselves. In this class, we will meet these women, read their writings, and listen to their confident and compelling voices as they narrate their own spiritual experiences and engage with their own religious and cultural traditions.
