Mohammad Salama, George Mason University professor of Arabic, was recently appointed Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Professor Salama, who is a core faculty member of the AbuSulayman Center for Global Islamic Studies steering committee, previously served as department chair for Modern and Classical Languages.
“Professor Salama brings extensive leadership experience that has prepared him for this new role as a member of the college’s executive leadership team,” said CHSS Dean Ann Ardis. “His commitment to diversity and inclusion, as demonstrated by his experience, research, mentoring, and community work, aligns well with CHSS’s mission, and we are excited that he has accepted the appointment,” she said.
Professor Salama’s academic career began with a bachelor’s degree in English and master’s degree in Arabic Literary and Translation Studies from the University of ‘Ayn Shams, Faculty of al-Alsun in Cairo, Egypt, followed by a master’s and doctorate in Comparative Literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He held faculty positions at San Francisco State University prior to joining Mason in 2021.
In his role as CHSS Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, Professor Salama will be responsible for leading college-wide efforts to support faculty excellence and promote a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging for CHSS faculty throughout their careers at Mason.
“A key tenet in carrying out a successful university mission is promoting and celebrating the diversity of all members of its community,” Professor Salama said. “I am looking forward to working with the faculty, Dean Ardis, the Associate Deans, CHSS senior staff, the Provost’s Office, among others, in supporting and providing guidance and resources for all our CHSS faculty community,” Professor Salama said.
